The Robotic Roommate: How AI Will Reshape Homelife in the Next Decade

AI Assistants: Ushering a New Era of Smart Home Living

On September 8, 1966, Star Trek arrived on our television screens. And we heard those immortal words for the first time. "Beam me up, Scotty." Every week, a new adventure flying through the galaxy to explore where "No man has gone before."
Ever since then, generations of Trekkies have been eager to see the show's next iteration. Myself included. How utterly fantastic were the imaginations that brought to life what seemed only possible in our dreams?

Fast-forward to today, artificial intelligence (AI) is not only developing beyond the set of science fiction TV shows into reality but has also burst forth into our everyday lives. AI assistants like Amazon's Alexa, Apple's Siri, and Google Assistant are at the forefront of this revolution and are increasingly becoming integral parts of our homes. These intelligent virtual companions are changing how we interact with technology and reshaping our domestic routines and experiences. Conversations like Ok Google, What is the weather like today. or Hey Siri, How do I get to.... are commonplace.

The AI assistants are like having a buddy who's super-smart and always ready to lend a hand. Talk to them, and boom – they give you the answer! It's pretty wild how they can understand our everyday chatter and do stuff for us. Need a reminder to pick up milk? They've got you covered. Want to turn off the lights without getting off the couch? Consider it done. They can even settle those random debates with your friends by dishing out facts on the fly. It's like having a personal assistant, but one that lives in your phone or smart speaker. But I will say they don't usually tell good jokes.

When smart devices like light bulbs or electric plugs are installed and programmed to interact with the AI assistant, we get convenience and hands-free operation. Instead of manually programming devices or navigating through menus, users can issue voice commands to control various aspects of their home. For instance, you can ask Alexa to turn on the lights, adjust the thermostat, or play your favourite music without lifting a finger. But wait, there's more! These AI buddies have been stepping up their game big time. They're not just flicking lights on and off anymore – they're practically becoming our personal life coaches. Need a reminder for an appointment next week? Your AI pal's got your back. Need to wake up at a specific time? Got you. Have you ever needed a quick recipe to make a new dish but forgot to look it up beforehand? It's like having a super-organized friend who knows where things are and never forgets anything.

AI Assistants practice machine learning, and the more interaction you may have with them, the more they can adjust the results to suit your style. That is when the tech people start talking about algorithms and stuff. As the capabilities of AI assistants continue to expand, their impact on our home lives will become even more profound. Whether that is in the form of automating household chores or providing personalized entertainment recommendations, these intelligent companions are poised to revolutionize how we live, work, and interact within our homes.

Streamlining Routine Tasks

A practical application of AI is streamlining routine tasks and ushering in a new era of smart home automation. A significant impact of AI lies in its ability to integrate seamlessly with Internet of Things (IoT) devices, enabling a cohesive and intelligent home ecosystem. AI-powered home security systems with advanced facial recognition and motion detection capabilities are available to homeowners. Of course, these may not be commonplace today, but they are a reality and will become more common in the coming months and years. These systems can learn your daily routines, identify potential threats, and alert you or the authorities in real-time.

Additionally, AI-driven energy management systems can optimize energy consumption by intelligently controlling heating, cooling, and lighting based on occupancy patterns and personal preferences.

There is a grocery store in Tacoma where you no longer need to check your purchases. It sees everything you put into your cart and bills your credit card as you leave. Imagine what will happen when we are able to link the grocery store to our smart refrigerators that track inventory, suggest recipes based on available ingredients, and then place grocery orders automatically. AI-enabled ovens and cooktops can adjust temperatures and cooking times based on the prepared dish, ensuring perfect results every time. Moreover, the potential for a centralized AI home control system is becoming increasingly viable. Imagine a single intelligent assistant that can manage all aspects of your home, from security and energy management to appliance control and entertainment systems. With natural language processing and voice recognition capabilities, you could simply issue commands to your AI assistant, and it would execute the desired tasks seamlessly.

Another type of AI that can help us in our homes is Large Language Models like ChatGPT, which can also do many things.

The other day, I was taking a course on Agentic AI. If you have never heard of that term, you aren't alone. I have only just a few days ago. Imagine you are in your kitchen, and rather than asking the AI a question, you tell it what you want to accomplish and then ask it to give you the steps to complete the project one at a time. Agentic AI will interact with you as you fulfill the tasks and adapt until you have reached a conclusion.

Here is an example of a prompt you might use for ChatGPT:
Me: "You're going to help me cook whatever I need. Since you can't directly lift pots or pans or get to the fridge, you will tell me the steps, and I will perform them. We will go one step at a time; ask me for what I want to cook."
Chat GPT response: "What would you like to cook"
Me: We have a chicken out and would like to have some vegetables and rice dishes to go along with it. Maybe with a Spanish flair
Chat GPT: "That sounds delicious! Let's start with a Spanish-style chicken, vegetable, and rice meal. Here's a basic outline:
  1. Spanish-Style Chicken (Pollo al Ajillo)
  2. Spanish Rice (Arroz Rojo)
  3. Roasted Vegetables with Olive Oil and Paprika
Let's begin with the chicken. Do you have garlic, olive oil, paprika, and white wine or chicken broth available?
Me: yes, I do.
ChatGPT: Great! Let's start with the Spanish-Style Chicken (Pollo al Ajillo). Here's what we'll do:

Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients

  • Ingredients:
    • 4-6 cloves of garlic (sliced thinly)
    • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
    • 1 teaspoon paprika
    • Salt and pepper to taste
    • 1/2 cup white wine or chicken broth
Let me know when you have these ingredients ready."

Our conversation continued as we worked through the process, with ChatGPT telling me what the next steps I should take were. Eventually, we would have our meal, even if we had never cooked anything before.

As AI continues to evolve, the possibilities for its integration into our homes are virtually limitless. From automating mundane chores to enhancing our security and energy efficiency to helping us cook our meals, AI is poised to revolutionize the way we live, making our homes smarter, more efficient, and more personalized than ever before. However, the rise of domestic AI assistants raises concerns about privacy, security, and increasing reliance on autonomous systems in our most personal living spaces.

As these technologies become more advanced and ubiquitous, it will be crucial to implement robust safeguards and ethical frameworks to ensure they align with human values and priorities. In our next issue, we will discuss some of these issues and offer recommendations on how we might better protect ourselves.

So, until then, let me know your experience with AI around your house and how you see it evolving.
